A
Algae
A roof fungus that causes dark streaks or stains on shingles. Common in shaded or north facing roof areas. It is usually cosmetic but can shorten shingle life over time.
Angled or Tilted Nails
Roofing nails driven into the deck at an angle instead of straight. This reduces holding power and can cause shingles to loosen or blow off in wind.
APA
A trade organization that sets standards for plywood and engineered wood products used in roof decking.
Apron Flashing
Metal flashing installed at the front base of a chimney or wall to direct water away from the roof opening.
ARMA
Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association. An industry group representing asphalt shingle manufacturers.
Asphalt
A waterproofing material derived from petroleum. It is the primary ingredient in most shingles and roofing sealants.
Asphalt Concrete Primer
An asphalt based primer used to prepare concrete or metal surfaces before applying asphalt sealants or membranes.
Asphalt Plastic Cement
A thick asphalt based sealant used for flashing repairs and minor sealing. Often called mastic, roof cement, or tar. Not intended as a long term fix by itself.
ASTM
ASTM International. The organization that establishes material testing and performance standards, including many roofing products.
B
Back Surfacing
Granular material on the back of shingles that prevents them from sticking together during shipping and storage.
Blistering
Small raised bubbles in shingles caused by trapped moisture or manufacturing issues. Can weaken shingles over time.
Blow Offs
Shingles that are torn or lifted off the roof by strong winds, usually due to poor nailing or aged materials.
Buckling
Wrinkles or ripples in shingles or underlayment caused by moisture, poor installation, or movement of the roof deck.
C
Closed Cut Valley
A valley installation where shingles from one roof plane cover the valley and are cut straight down the center line. Clean look, but must be done correctly to avoid leaks.
Corrosion
Rust or deterioration of metal roofing components such as flashing, vents, or fasteners.
Counter Flashing
Metal or siding material installed over base flashing to provide a second layer of waterproof protection, commonly used at chimneys and walls.
Cricket
A small peaked structure installed behind chimneys or large roof penetrations to divert water around them.
Cupping
Shingles curling upward at the edges, often caused by over exposure, improper installation, or installing over old roofing.
