The Gutter Can Be Clean While the Drain Under Your Yard Is Plugged
The buried portion of a downspout drainage system can collect roof grit, leaves, pine needles, dirt and decomposed debris for years before a homeowner realizes there is a problem.
Ernie's Gutter mechanically cleans qualifying rigid underground downspout drains, flushes loosened material with water and can camera-scope the line when additional diagnosis is needed.
Family Owned Since 1978. Denver gutter, downspout and drainage service.
What Is Underground Downspout Drain Cleaning?
Underground downspout drain cleaning removes serviceable sediment and debris from qualifying rigid buried drainage pipe. Ernie's Gutter accesses the underground line, mechanically works through the restriction, flushes loosened material with water and verifies discharge when the outlet is accessible. Camera scoping can be added when the pipe condition requires further diagnosis.
If this is your first time hearing this, think about the gutter system as one continuous water path.
Rain hits the roof. The gutter collects it. The downspout carries it toward ground level. When that downspout connects to a buried drain, the underground line becomes the final part of the roof-water system.
Homeowners can look into a gutter and see leaves. They can inspect the visible downspout. What they usually cannot see is what has accumulated 20, 40 or 70 feet inside a buried drainage line.
Small amounts of roof grit, dirt, pine needles, leaves and organic material can enter during every storm. When the underground line has little fall, has settled or contains a low area, some of that material can remain behind.
Over several seasons, fine debris settles and organic material decomposes. Eventually the usable opening becomes too small to accept runoff as quickly as the downspout delivers it.
Sediment Builds From the Roof Down
A roof is exposed to everything Colorado puts in the air. Dust, pollen, tree debris, asphalt shingle granules, leaves and pine needles eventually move toward the gutter.
Cleaning the gutter removes material still sitting in the trough. It does not remove material that has already passed through the gutter outlet and downspout into the underground drainage system.
Once debris reaches the buried pipe, water velocity becomes important. A drainage line needs usable fall and a dependable outlet so runoff continues moving instead of sitting in the pipe.
Many existing underground downspout drains have very little fall. Others settle after installation and develop low areas where water remains between storms.
Roof Grit & Sediment
Fine dirt, shingle granules and airborne material can travel through the gutter outlet and settle along the bottom of a slow-moving underground line.
Leaves & Pine Needles
Organic debris can catch around fittings or existing sediment. As it decomposes, it combines with dirt and can create a heavier restriction.
Low Spots & Poor Fall
A section that holds standing water gives debris time to settle. Cleaning can remove sediment, but it cannot physically raise an improperly installed or settled pipe.
Rigid Smooth-Wall Pipe Can Be Serviceable — Accordion Pipe Is a Non-Starter
Before Ernie's Gutter puts mechanical cleaning equipment into an underground downspout line, we determine what kind of pipe is buried there.
This is a firm service limitation.
We Do Not Mechanically Clean Flexible Corrugated Landscape Pipe
The black flexible drainage material commonly installed by landscapers has a ribbed, accordion-style wall. It is inexpensive and easy to bend around obstacles, but those same characteristics make it unsuitable for our mechanical drain-cleaning equipment.
The cleaning cable or head can catch the internal corrugations. Older material may already be weakened, crushed or deteriorated underground. Continuing to force mechanical equipment through it can puncture or damage the sidewall.
If we identify flexible corrugated or accordion-style landscape drainage pipe, it is a non-starter for mechanical cleaning. We stop there.
Rigid Sewer & Drain PVC
Suitable rigid smooth-wall sewer-and-drain PVC may be a candidate for mechanical cleaning when the pipe, fittings and access are serviceable.
Schedule 40 PVC
Rigid smooth-wall Schedule 40 PVC can provide a durable and serviceable underground water path when appropriate for the installation.
Flexible Corrugated Pipe
No mechanical cleaning. The ribbed interior and lightweight wall create too much risk of equipment catching or damaging the existing line.
A Clear Downspout Does Not Prove the Underground Drain Is Clear
A partially restricted underground drain can fool you.
A garden hose may run through it. A light rain may disappear into it. That does not prove the line can handle the amount of runoff produced by a Denver thunderstorm.
During heavy rain, a roof can concentrate substantial water into one downspout in only a few minutes.
If sediment has reduced the usable opening inside the underground line, the pipe may not discharge water as quickly as the downspout feeds it.
Water can then back up at the underground connection, spill beside the foundation or contribute to overflow farther upstream.
The objective is not simply making water disappear underground. We want the complete system to move roof runoff to a dependable discharge point away from the structure.
Underground Downspout Drain Cleaning Pricing
Standard pricing is based on the approximate length of a qualifying rigid underground drain. Base service includes normal setup, disconnecting or accessing the downspout when required, mechanical cleaning, normal water flushing, checking discharge where accessible and reconnecting the downspout.

Qualifying rigid smooth-wall underground drain.
Camera Scope
$125 additional.
Camera scoping can help investigate recurring restrictions, standing water or unusual underground conditions when pipe and access conditions permit.
Heavy Sediment
A severely sedimented qualifying line may require substantially more cleaning time or specialized cleaning. Additional work is quoted separately.
Difficult Cleaning
More involved qualifying drain-cleaning work can commonly move into approximately the $525–$650 total service range.
What Standard Pricing Does Not Include
Published pricing assumes reasonable access and a qualifying serviceable rigid drain line.
It does not include excavation, landscape restoration, replacement pipe, collapsed or crushed pipe repair, correcting underground slope, rebuilding fittings, locating unknown buried discharge points, substantial root removal or reconstruction of a failed drainage system.
Our Underground Downspout Drain Cleaning Process
We do not blindly force cleaning equipment into an unknown buried pipe. We first determine whether the existing system is a reasonable candidate for mechanical service.
Inspect
We inspect the accessible downspout, connection and visible drainage components.
Identify Pipe
We determine whether the line appears to be qualifying rigid pipe or flexible corrugated material.
Access Line
When required, the downspout is disconnected so the equipment can properly enter the buried drain.
Mechanically Clean
Drain-cleaning equipment is worked through qualifying rigid pipe to remove serviceable sediment and debris restrictions.
Flush & Check
Water is used under appropriate conditions to move loosened debris and help evaluate drainage flow.
Reconnect
The downspout is reconnected when appropriate and significant conditions encountered during service are explained.
Cleaning Cannot Correct a Bad Underground Installation
There is an important difference between a pipe containing removable debris and a pipe that has physically failed.
Mechanical cleaning may restore flow when sediment, leaves or other serviceable debris are restricting an otherwise usable rigid line.
Cleaning cannot change the elevation of a pipe installed too flat. It cannot lift a section that has settled and developed a belly. It cannot reconnect a separated fitting, rebuild a crushed pipe or redesign a system that never had a dependable outlet.
If cleaning exposes signs of a structural problem, camera inspection can help determine whether further cleaning makes sense or whether physical repair should be considered.
Clean It, Diagnose It or Replace It?
1. Clean It
Cleaning makes sense when a qualifying rigid line appears structurally serviceable and debris is restricting otherwise usable flow.
2. Diagnose It
Camera inspection can help when water remains in the pipe, a restriction returns or equipment encounters an abnormal condition.
3. Repair or Replace It
Physical correction may be required for collapsed sections, separated fittings, severe bellies, corrugated pipe or other structural drainage failures.
Important Service Limitation
Drain cleaning is a reasonable professional attempt to restore flow through a qualifying serviceable underground drainage line. It is not a guarantee that an unknown buried system can be cleared.
If continuing could reasonably damage the existing pipe, surrounding drainage system or our equipment, Ernie's Gutter may stop the cleaning attempt.
Existing underground conditions are outside our control, including pre-existing deterioration, improper installation, hidden damage, collapsed or crushed pipe, inadequate slope, separated fittings, bellies, roots, buried obstructions and inaccessible outlets.

Gutter Repair DenverUnderground Downspout Drain Cleaning FAQs
1. How much does underground downspout drain cleaning cost?
Standard pricing is $325 for qualifying lines up to 30 feet, $375 for 31–50 feet and $450 for 51–75 feet.
2. Can you clean black corrugated landscape drain pipe?
No. Ernie's Gutter does not mechanically clean flexible corrugated or accordion-style landscape drainage pipe because mechanical equipment can catch the ribs or damage the pipe wall.
3. What kind of underground pipe can you clean?
The service is intended for qualifying accessible rigid smooth-wall drainage pipe. Suitability depends on the actual pipe, fittings, access and existing condition.
4. Why do underground downspout drains clog?
Roof grit, dirt, leaves, pine needles and decomposed organic material can enter through the gutter system. Low water velocity and underground low spots can allow that material to settle.
5. Do you disconnect the downspout?
When required for proper access, we disconnect the downspout from the underground line and reconnect it after service when appropriate.
6. Do you flush the line?
Yes. Under appropriate conditions, water flushing helps move loosened material and helps us evaluate drainage flow.
7. Can you camera-scope the drain?
Yes, when access and pipe conditions permit. Camera scoping during the cleaning service is $125 additional.
8. Can cleaning fix bad underground slope?
No. Cleaning removes serviceable debris. It cannot change pipe elevation, eliminate a belly, reconnect a fitting or repair collapsed pipe.
9. Is cleaning guaranteed to open the drain?
No. The service is a professional attempt to restore flow through a qualifying serviceable line. Unknown buried structural conditions can prevent successful cleaning.
10. What happens if the line cannot be cleaned?
We stop when continuing is inappropriate or could damage the system. The next step may involve camera diagnosis, locating the failure, excavation, repair or replacement.
Find Out What Is Happening After the Downspout Goes Underground
If the gutter and visible downspout are clear but water is still backing up, the buried line may be the missing piece. Ernie's Gutter can evaluate qualifying rigid underground downspout drains and determine whether mechanical cleaning, flushing or camera inspection is appropriate.
